About “Canada’s Ocean Playground”

People from around the world have been visiting Halifax for business and pleasure since at least the 1870s, and it continues to draw both global visitors and tourists from right in our backyard. You may have heard the city of Halifax being referred to as “Canada’s Ocean Playground” in the past, or you may have even seen the phrase gracing our provincial vehicles’ license plates! But how did it get that nickname in the first place?

Halifax is conveniently located near four major bodies of water: the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Gulf of Maine to the southwest, the Bay of Fundy to the west, and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence to the north. Each of these incredible locations offers something unique in terms of water attractions, whether you’re looking for something calm like whale watching or something exciting like sea kayaking. The possibilities are all within reach of central Halifax, making this city the perfect place for nature and water lovers to take advantage of short term rentals!

Things to Do

So, what exactly can you do on the waters during your time in Halifax? Virtually any water sport you can think of! One of the most popular water-based activities in the area is sea kayaking. There are countless companies along the Halifax waterways that will take you on guided kayak tours, perfect for all skill levels; even those who have never been on a kayak before will quickly learn the ropes and feel at ease on the waters. As you paddle along, you’ll learn about the history of the area as well as the stunning flora and fauna all around you.

For something a bit slower paced but still just as exciting, head out on a whale watching tour! Most whale watching tours in the area run from May through October, but you’ll likely be able to see whales from July through September. The most common whales you can look out for include pilot whales, North Atlantic Right Whales, fin whales, and minke whales. You’re most likely to see whales in the Bay of Fundy or from Cape Breton Island, though it’s entirely possible to see when from within the city limits, too!

Lunenburg is a nearby coastal town that has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while smaller areas like Hubbards and Peggy’s Cove are ideal for those who want to become one with nature.
